Interview with Signs of Darkness

By the end of 1996/ beginning of 1997, Signs of Darkness from Belgium released their debut-demo "Odes to our Brumal Kingdom". With the help of two Infernal Beauty members they delivered us a fantastic demo, worth bying it. Songs like "Thorns of an Ancient Gaelic Battlefield", "The Blackenend Rose", "Transylvanian Bloodthirst", "Immortal Dreams of Crapathian Woods" and "December Bride (Part I)" give us some melodic Black Metal with sometimes keyboards in it. The cover is drawn by Kris Verwimp.

Signs of Darkness was formed late '95, but it existed already under another name. With the old members it was almost impossible to play fast. In the beginning they played some Death Metal, later on it became more melodic and turned into Black Metal, the result is this demo "Odes to our Brumal Kingdom". Following is a short interview with Ruud (drums) from Signs of Darkness.

The demo has an excellent quality, was it hard working?

No not really, the studio was well equiped and the drums were right from the first time. This was good because so we had more time to do the rest and to do the mixing.

Two Infernal Beauty-members helped you guys, how?

Yes, indeed, Kristof and Joachim helped us, and I think that without their help, the demo wouldn't have been there. Joachim (backing vocals) and Kristof (synths) had to use their inspiration on our music in a very short time and I think that in the end the result is pretty good. Some of the keyboard parts had to be invented by Kristof the same day of the recordings.

Although Signs of Darkness is not like most of the new Black Metal bands, don't you have fear from the fact Black Metallers could be not interested?

I think that it would be boring if all Black Metal bands play the same style of music. The only way t obe interesting for the people is to do something that isn't done by another band yet. But actually we're not very interested in what the people think, we just play the music we want to play and fun going it.

When I look at your songtitles, I think they're inspired by ancient history, also proud of 'our' history?

I don't really take care of the lyrics, but I think the lyrics have to be in-depth. They have to got some meaning and have to fit together with our music. Always singing "Kill the Christians" or "Satan" is bored, don't you think so? That's why most of our lyrics are inspired by history, and are made into some sort of story.

It seems that Signs of Darkness doesn't bost with a "pseudo-Satanic" image like some bands do?

Yes indeed, everyone has his own way of thinking and if you copy the image of some of these bands while it is not your philosophy, I think you're wrong.

What do you find the most important thing?

Music comes first, because you play music for yourself. The rest is all of secondary importance. When you're in a succesful band I think it's different but we may not look forward too far...

Bands that you prefer?

Well, i like the faster bands like Dark Funeral, Satyricon, Dissection, Immortal,... But Opeth, Old Man's Child, Bal-Sagoth and Dimmu Borgir are also very good. There are still a lof of bands I look up to, but there are to many to write them all down.

Do you think the Black Metal scene will last long because there are so many bands?

At this moment I don't care, we just keep on doing the things we want to do and we'll see where we finish at the end.

Does Signs of Darkness had some 'success' already?

There are a lot of people asking for our demo, more than we actually thought... Labels did send us some positive reactions, but nothing concrete yet. Signs of Darkness also has to grow, and we need time for that. I don't think we can complain, we're not running bad for a just-started band.

Anything confirmed for the future?

We don't have any concrete plans for the future right now, but as I said: we just keep on doing what we're doing and we'll see... Maybe a new demo will be released, but I think it will still last a year or something like that.

When did you start making music?

We're already busy from the time we were young with playing instruments but we never had a real education in that. Although I don't think we have to 'bow down' for other bands with members from our age.

Are you listening to Metal for a long time now?

When I was ten, I started listening to bands like Iron Maiden, after that there were bands like Metallica, Sepultura, Slayer,... I evoluated to Death Metal and right now I'm very much into Black Metal...

The demo "Odes to our Brumal Kingdom" is available for 200 Bfr.
