True Metal über Alles! by Lugbúrz (1997)
Belgium keeps spawning new Black Metal bands. Which deep, dark mouths of Hell do they still coming out? Actually I don't care, as long as they produce quality music why even bother? Such new, talented band is Signs of Darkness. As you can see in the Introduction page, their latest demo stranded on the 3rd place of my Top 5. I decided to ask drummer Ruud Gysen and vocalist Joris Meeuwissen what the future-plans look like.
(Ruud) Sure, most of the reviews of 'Ödes to our Brumal Kingdom' where very positif. Thanks to those reviews, we received a lot of fanmail. So, I think we can't complain.
Did you expect these reactions?
(Ruud) No, not at all. I knew the reviews wouldn't be too bad, but I never expected such a great respond. Well, life can be full of surprises.
Tell me about it! It's not only my opinion but as you can read in several reviews of the demo, in some local 'zines, you're playing quality black metal and it is a shame that nowadays Black Metal CD's are being released of which the quality is below all imagination. Did you receive any interest from labels yet or is this to early to ask?
(Ruud) Some labels were interesed, but they were all too busy, they said. Maybe we need some time to grow more, to become more professional.
I’ve heard you’re planning to record a new demo. Can you tell us the first information?
(Joris) That's right. The demo will be recorded somewhere in 1998, I think. We're just thinking about it, we haven't planned anything yet. It will only contain new songs, some titles: 'Embraced by Dreams', 'December Bride, part II', Stars in a Nocturnal Sky are like a Thousand Screams in the Ruïned Rosegarden' and 'The Last Shivering Moon... beyond Autumn Leaves'. The songs are all more complex then the others. There are more solo's, lots of epic synth. parts and off course black-vocals. Now is that we've got a new bandmember (Sven), he does the normal vocals. I think the 3rd demo will also be recorded in Music House on 24 track ADAT in corporation with Joachim and Kristof. But when we've planned something, I let you know!
Cool. The demo-cover looks off course very, very awesome. But that is probably because mighty Kris Verwimp drew the picture. Satisfied with him, will he do the art for any of your future releases?
(Ruud) Kris knows exactly what we want and his drawings fit perfect with the music. That's the reason why many other black metal bands consult Kris. He will also draw the next demo-cover. We know that for sure!
I didn't see much flyers of you, playing on stage. How come, any plans to play live in the future?
(Ruud) We did play live a few times, but we're not hurried. There's enough for us, although in the future we hope to play more live.
Some tracks on the demo contain 2 vocals at the same time of which one is a very aggressive and stunning scream. How do you handle this on stage (live)?
(Joris) Well, the vocals aren't a problem. I just sing my lines and the keyboardplayer (Joachim) assists me.
You also received enforcement of two Infernal Beauty members. Will they join forces live as well or how do you manage that?
(Joris) Yes, I just mentioned that Joachim does the Keyboard part live. He also takes some vocal parts. Kristof played the keyboard\synths parts on the demo, he only assists us when Joachim is to busy to do it,... so you can see we always take an keyboardplayer with us.
Do you rehearsal with Joachim and Kristof, why did you decided to work with them?
(Joris) It wasn't so difficult to get in touch with the guys, they only live 8km away. We always visite each other's rehearsals. When we're planning a gig we just ask Joachim to join in on a few rehearsals and that's it.
Like the biography told, Signs of Darkness existed earlier under a different name, playing Death/Black metal which is now evolved in mainly Black. Did you release any demo's or did you made any own tracks with these earlier band? What's the exact name, btw?
(Ruud) It called DEVASTATOR and it really sucked. The songs were shit. We ever made a demo but fortunately it doesn't exist anmore.
What’s your favorite Belgian release all times(CD/demo)?
(Joris) That isn't so difficult: Ancient Rites, Infernal Beauty, The Darkening
Anything left to say to all the Evil Surfing People who are reading this interview rite now?
(Ruud) TRUE METAL ÜBER ALLES!!!
Darkest Blessings from rC under Lugbúrz and thanks for the interview!
